In the 2023 February holidays ATMB said A40 traffic tripled every weekend, with about 80,000 vehicles on the Saturdays, so on a winter Saturday in the French school holidays we suggest leaving an hour earlier than you would on a weekday.
When to leave Chamonix
The table below is our suggestion, not a rule from the airport or any operator. It allows 1 h 15 of driving, which is what the Chamonix tourist office gives, 15 minutes of slack, and about two hours at the airport. On a changeover Saturday it adds one more hour for the queues.

ATMB, which runs the A40, publishes forecasts of its busy hours ahead of the holidays, so look at atmb.com in the week you travel. Your airline's bag drop closing time comes first: if it asks for more than two hours, move the pick-up earlier by the difference.
The Saturdays to watch this winter
French schools break up for winter in three zones, a week apart, so the changeover Saturdays stack up in February. From the national school calendar, the busiest days for the road should be:
- Saturday 19 and 26 December 2026, and 2 January 2027
- Saturday 6, 13, 20 and 27 February 2027, and 6 March 2027
That list is our reading of the calendar, not an ATMB forecast, which has not been published yet. For scale, ATMB expected more than 80,000 vehicles on the February holiday Saturdays of 2023, and more than 1,800 vehicles an hour leaving the valley through Cluses on Sunday evenings between 16:00 and 20:00.

SAT Mont-Blanc and Borini run the FlixBus line from Chamonix Sud to Geneva Airport and on to Geneva bus station, from about 19 euros (SAT Mont-Blanc's advertised fare). On a sampled Saturday in October 2026 the 07:55 from Chamonix reached the airport at 10:45, via Annemasse, and trains ran roughly hourly. The last listed departure was 20:20, reaching the airport at 00:15 via Martigny, which is too late for most evening flights. The winter timetable starts in mid-December 2026. - Private transfer
Door to door, one vehicle, and the pick-up time is yours to set. For four people with ski bags it is usually the simplest, and the prices page shows what operators advertise.
Where you are dropped at the airport
Professional coaches and shuttles drop passengers at the front of the terminal, on the check-in level, which is where departures are. A private car can also use Kiss and Fly, which is for drop-off only.
If your flight leaves from the French sector, which mostly means domestic flights to France, tell the driver when you book. That sector is reached by road only through the customs road from Ferney-Voltaire, not from the main Swiss-side forecourt. The arrivals page explains the two sides.
